Special Support for The Jane Moore Trust
Sunday Times Best Selling Author Donna Ashworth has shared her beautiful poem ‘SPECIAL’ with supporters of The Jane Moore Trust and would encourage a donation of £2 to the charity in way of support.
SPECIAL
If you love a child who’s special
in the way their brain maps out
then chances are you know
what tiger love is all about
the need to fight their corner
when they’re up against that wall
the instinct of the mother
can make you 12 feet tall
you’ll understand the surge of love
from deep within your soul
when that little fighter hits
another hard-won goal
the world can feel so scary
as you watch them leave your door
your heart within your mouth
your stomach on the floor
if you love a child who’s different
the world can’t understand
you’ll know the joyous moments
when they truly learn to stand
your pride is off the scale
your love a wondrous thing
I’m glad you know the special light
that special children bring.
Baroness Linklater
It was Veronica who founded the New School, Butterstone, driven by a determination that young people, left behind by mainstream education, should be given the chance to turn their lives around. And so it turned out. For the next 30 years, a generation of pupils, rejected, and often traumatised by their previous experiences, discovered the life they never had, in the caring and encouraging atmosphere Veronica had created.
The inspiration was her daughter Freya, who had known little but misery in the various schools, north and south of the border as Veronica searched for a placement that met Freya’s additional support needs. Bullied and neglected, Freya had found herself isolated, “drowning at the back of the class,” as her mother described it.
There was only one solution – to found a school that listened to the children she called “educationally fragile,” and gear its classes and its curriculum to their needs. She called it the New School, Butterstone, because it was housed in the building where her parents had once started a successful girls’ school. At the New School, children who had known little but isolation, came together to support each other. The teachers learned as much from them as they did from the staff, nurtured by an atmosphere that encouraged mutual support and built confidence. “We need to tell each pupil that ‘it’s brilliant to be you,’” Veronica used to say. And when Freya, after her first term told her: “I have some sunshine in me now,” she felt her mission had been accomplished.
Moore House Academy, Dunkeld has embraced that legacy, and, today, is transforming the lives of another generation of children, giving the real aspirations in life just as Veronica did all those years ago.
Moore House Academy, Dunkeld (The Jane Moore Trust) is one of 3 schools within the Moore House Group.
